DAVID: I GAVE UP TREBLE FOR TEAM

- FRASER WILSON

DAVID WOTHERSPOON was on the cusp of a first-ever hat-trick in midweek when he handed late spot kick duties off to Callum Hendry.

But the St Johnstone stalwart insists his selfless act will have worked a treat if it helps his side bust a league goalscoring drought that has seen the Perth side slump to the bottom of the table.

Wotherspoon gave the ball to Hendry in the 88th minute having already bagged a brace in the 7-0 Betfred Cup bashing of Brechin.

His team-mate smashed home from 12 yards for his first goal of the season.

And Wotherspoon said: “I would have loved to have got a hat-trick but Callum has been struggling for goals.

“I thought that if he scored the penalty it would be the boost that he needed.

“I’m confident it will do him the world of good and that he’ll kick on and keep hitting the back of the net. He owes me big time now!

“He thanked me after on the group chat and on Twitter. He thanked me personally as well. He was really grateful but the best way of thanking me is by kicking on and getting more goals.”

Wotherspoon is hopeful back-to-back cup wins over Kelty and Brechin – scoring nine goals in the process – can help them end a sorry league run which has seen them net just once in seven games.

It was a victory over Hamilton at the same stage last season that lifted Saints off bottom spot – with the midfielder chipping in with a double that day and Hendry netting a late winner in Perth.

He said: “That game was a kickstart to our season. It was two each and Callum got the winning goal, which just gave us a massive boost for the rest of the season.

“We will be looking to take confidence from the last couple of games.”
