Square up to Cube’s millionaire challenge

The game show set inside a box is back – with bigger prizes and star contestants DAVID COLLINS

- WORDS

Bouncing a ball into a bucket, or balancing on a beam? The choice is yours. Easy, right? As any players who have dared to enter The Cube will know, the playground challenges may look simple, but when they take place inside a perspex cube and you have the possibility of winning big bucks, just playing catch becomes harder than Mastermind.

It’s been off screen for six years but now the series is back with host Phillip Schofield. And this time, there are more amazing tasks, a bigger jackpot of up to £1million, and the twist that contestants now play in pairs.

Phillip, who is such a fan of the show he even has one of the games (Stack) at home – which he admits to playing on “drunken nights” – tells us more...

Are there any stand-out moments from filming?

I firmly believe we have the best episodes of the series. They’re the best I think we’ve ever done.

Will the iconic games be making a welcome return or are they all new?

You’ve got new games that have been invented because there are now teams of two. We’ve also adapted one of the iconic challenges and turned it into a twoplayer game and you’ve got the ones that everyone loves to play and watch – and loves to think they could do.

How would you fare against The Million Pound Cube?

Some of the challenges I think I would be very good at – the throwing or memory games would be fine – but the complete undoing of me are the ones where you have got the metal hoops and the long pole and you are threading through the hoops. There’s no way I would be able to do that.

We see some famous faces also take on The Cube, how did they do?

They provided us with some extraordinary moments. Kevin Clifton was astonishing at one of the games he was playing. I have never known anyone to be so focused for such a long time.

Strictly dancer Kevin Clifton is paired up with girlfriend Stacey Dooley Kevin reveals:

I think we worked well as a team as we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. There was one challenge where I was offering some constructive criticism but Stacey jokingly tells me that I was being bossy! She was brilliant at the challenge and was much calmer under pressure than me.
