Binos can be a strong contender

-

QUEEN’S PARK might be the favourites but Ross McGeachie believes Stirling will be battling for the title too.

Neither side managed to find the net in a hard-fought contest at Forthbank.

But Binos skipper McGeachie said: “I would say a draw was probably a fair result but there were plenty of positives to take against a tough Queen’s side.

“They are full-time but we have a pretty strong squad as well.

“We want to be up there challenging and this was an encouraging start.”

Queen’s keeper Willie Muir touched a David Wilson free-kick on to the bar while Louis Longridge and Will Baynham also threatened for the Spiders.

Edinburgh City got going with a 5-1 blitz at Brechin. Conrad Balatoni headed the Citizens in front then Liam Brown netted just after the restart.

Martin Scott scrambled Brechin back into the game but Blair Henderson’s penalty, Josh Campbell’s strike and a close-range Danny Jardine goal sealed it.

Elgin enjoyed a 4-1 win at Stranraer with Russell Dingwall, Kane Hester and Conor O’Keefe on target before Tom Devitt headed a goal back. Dingwall’s penalty rounded things off after the home side’s Kieran Millar was dismissed.

Annan won 3-0 at Cowdenbeath with Nathan Flanagan, Iain Anderson and Jack Purdue the scorers.

Stenhousemuir ruined Albion Rovers boss Brian Reid’s first league game in charge with a 3-1 victory as Creag Little headed his first goal for the Warriors.

STIRLING UNI boss Chris Geddes was delighted to see his side start the season by claiming six points out of nine.

The Scholars were unlucky not to get a point last week against East Kilbride then beat Cumbernauld in midweek before a 3-1 win over Spartans at the weekend.

Geddes said: “It’s much better than last year. We’ve now just got to try to keep up the performances.”

Jamie Penker, Conor Doan and Louis Kennedy netted for Uni.

Bonnyrigg made it three out of three with a 3-0 win over Gretna 2008 who had Bryan Gilfillan sent off. Jonny Stewart, an own goal from Joe Jackson and a Jordan Smith goal counted for Rose.
