Actress Neve Campbell is loving filming the fifth in the horror movie franchise – but don’t miss her latest tear-jerking role as the mother of a terminally ill teenager
SHE’S nearly 50 but is excited to be terrified and covered in blood. Neve Campbell is currently filming her iconic character Sidney Prescott in the fifth instalment of Scream.
The original 1996 film and the Ghostface character have become as part of Halloween as dookin’ for apples.
Neve, who is back alongside David Arquette and Courteney Cox in the horror franchise, said: “I’m 47 and I’m going to be covered in blood. I’m excited to get back to it.
“We had such a magical experience together making those films. It was such an important time for all of us.
“We’ve stayed in touch, we love seeing each other and we love reminiscing. There are so many stars that came out of those films. It’s kind of a Who’s Who when you watch Scream films now.”
The Covid pandemic has delayed filming – but fans are just happy the fifth one is being made after director West Craven, who helmed the first four, passed away in 2015.
The Scream baton has been taken up by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett who previously directed 2019’s comedy horror Ready or Not.
Neve admitted she wasn’t sure at first about returning to her best known role.

director, Wes Craven, passed away and I wasn’t sure about doing a film without him. But the new directors came to me with this beautiful letter, saying they’ve become directors and love film because of these films and because of Wes.”
The movie has still had a few bumps. Covid delayed filming this year and last month three crew members tested positive although filming continued in North Carolina where the shooting is taking place because they weren’t in the “primary pod” which includes the actors and directors.
Speaking of filming in a pandemic Neve admitted: “I have to say i t ’s been l i tt l e challenging .
“But I’m excited. It’s going to be great. Scream means a lot to me so it’s amazing to be stepping back into SydneySydney’ss shoes afteraft all this time.”
Scream made NNeve a Hollywood A-listerliste but it also lead to NevNeve, at the height of her ffame, taking a step baback to tred the boardboards in London’s West EEnd in the mid-noughtienoughties.

NNeve revealed:ld “I was ini my 20s20 andd I had just gotten to that place where I was just so busy. It was magical, I was so blessed, but I worked so hard for insane hours and insane days without any breaks. “I realised that I didn’t really have a life of my own and I started to feel as though I didn’t have perspective on what I wanted or cared about. “It was all about what everybody else cared about. That’s why I did it and I learned so much. I learned more about my art, life and other cultures than I ever would have.” peaking of other cultures, Neve’s dad Gerry is from Glasgow and, although she was raised in Canada, she’s proud of her Scottish roots, well some of them. She said: “I’m a terrible cook because my dad is from Glasgow. The Scots aren’t known for their cuisine. Haggis, anyone?” While her parents divorced when Neve was two, she and her elder brother Christian grew up with their drama teacher dad in Ontario. She said: “I grew up performing with my older brother in a Scottish teacher troupe that my dad directed and performed in.” While Neve loved ballet, her first professional job was in the original Canadian cast of The Phantom of the Opera when she was 15 which lead ultimately to her TV break in 1994’s Party of Five. Her latest role is Laura Sobiech, the mother of terminally ill teenage musician Zach. The teenager from Minnesota was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was 14 years old. The young musician was determined to make his mark before his death and made the charts with the song Clouds before his death a week after his 18th birthday. The film is based on the memoir by Laura and stars Fin Argus as Zach.
It’s a tear-jerker film and as a mum to two sons, Caspian, eight, and Raynor, who she adopted in 2018 with partner JJ Feild, a tough one to film.
But Neve revealed: “I think over time as an actor you learn when it’s appropriate to shut it off and not go there.
“When I was young, I would immerse myself so deeply in a role because I felt like I really needed to feel it all the time in order get to my best performance. I have since realised that that is really unhealthy. It’s not great for one’s soul. “I’m a mother of two young boys so it was a lot to go there all for this.
“It was really sad getting to know Laura but she is so incredible and has such a beautiful perspective on the whole thing that she really helped me not feel too melancholic about the whole thing.
“It was hard on set but it was exactly what it needed to be. We also had lots of moments of joy too. You have to have those lighter times in order to get through the days.”
She describes Laura as a “phenomenal woman” and lists her “courage, honesty, raw emotion, strength and faith” in dealing with her son’s cancer. The actress claimed she feels blessed to be part of a film that “could really affect people in a positive way”.
Laura was on set but Neve initially was reluctant to delve too deeply, worried that she would remind the grieving mum of very dark days in her life.
But Neve said: “I was apprehensive about asking her certain things because I wanted to be sensitive toward her but she was like, ‘This is my story. This is what we went through and we want you to know what happened’.”
Clouds is out now on Disney +. The fifth Scream movie will be released in 2022.
