2017 Aglianico del Vulture, Le Ralle £8.95 at the Wine Society

Today’s other red is from Northern Italy and uses a familiar grape (sangiovese of Chianti fame) but this guy is from the south and uses a variety few know, or possibly can pronounce. Aglianico (“Are-lee-anico”) produces weighty, concentrated, full wine sometimes called the Barolo of the south. This example has firm tannin, good acidity with hints of tobacco and chocolate to embellish its smooth cherry, bramble and mulberry flavours.
