Greatest moments live again, in vibrant full colour

-

SEEN for the first time in colour, these are some of Scotland’s most famous sporting images.

Using the latest technology, the grainy black and white pictures of some of our biggest triumphs in football, boxing, golf and swimming have been transformed.

The iconic photographs, some dating back to the 1940s, tell the story of our nation’s incredible successes, as well as hard-fought failures, in sport.

Brought back from the past, they include a jubilant Jim Baxter hugging Billy Bremner seconds after Scotland beat England 3-2 at Wembley in April 1967 in what some regard as the national side’s greatest game.

Then there’s the unforgettable image of Celtic’s captain Billy McNeill, becoming the first British footballer to hold aloft the European Cup at the Estádio Nacional in Lisbon a month later.

In colour, the images of these football legends reveal more detail than ever seen before.

And then there are the pictures of some of the biggest international sport stars who came to Scotland, like the glorious shot of Muhammad Ali when he arrived in August 1965 for a fight with Jimmy Ellis at Paisley’s ice rink and delighted photographers by wearing a kilt.

The boxer, then still known as Cassius Clay, met Ghanian fans William Vanderbuya, six, and his sister Frances at Glasgow’s McDonald Hotel.

Then there’s Diego Maradona, who passed away last week, taking on Paul Hegarty at Hampden in 1979, when he was only 18.

MemoryLane.co.uk uses new technology to automatically colourise black and white photos.

You can get free access to our archive of millions of photos, taken as far back as 1878. Discover huge archives from the Daily Record and Mail library from the 1900s to 1970s, and help our community grow by uploading your own photos and adding information to ours.

Historian, TV broadcaster and author Professor Kate Williams said: “Memory Lane is holding up a mirror to our past by creating a bigger, more inclusive picture of our national identity.”
