Trump: If I can’t overturn poll result, I’ll see you in 4 years
DONALD Trump has vowed to return to the White House in 2024 if he fails to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in this year’s election.
The US president also repeated his baseless election fraud claims at a reception for members of the Republican National Committee in Washington.
He told his supporters: “It’s been an amazing four years. We are trying to do another four years. Otherwise, I’ll see you in four years.”
Trump, 74, has refused to concede to Democrat Biden, 78, and is challenging poll results in a number of states.
Anger is growing that Trump’s focus is on trying to overturn the result as
Covid-19 rages across the States. His own attorney general Bill Barr has said the Justice Department had not uncovered evidence of widespread voter fraud.
Trump said at the reception: “It’s certainly an unusual year. We won an election but they don’t like that. I call it a rigged election and I always will.”
The Covid Tracking Project yesterday reported the biggest daily death toll in the US since the start of the pandemic.
Figures showed 2473 deaths and 99,000 hospital cases. There were also 1.3million tests carried out across the country with 177,000 cases. So far more than 271,000 Americans have died due to the coronavirus and a further 14million have been infected – the highest anywhere in the world. It has emerged that Barr’s Department of Justice is investigating a potentially criminal scheme involving paying a bribe to people either in or connected to the White House in exchange for an unknown person receiving a presidential pardon. Court records were unsealed by the US District Court for the District of Columbia. They say the investigation involves two people, whose names are redacted, improperly acting as lobbyists to secure the pardon for a person whose name is also redacted.
The plot involved the person offering “a substantial political contribution in exchange for a presidential pardon or reprieve of sentence”, the records said.
Trump has reportedly discussed preemptive pardons for his children Don Jr, Eric and Ivanka, his son-in-law Jared Kushner and his lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
It is claimed he fears a Biden administration may seek retribution by targeting his three oldest offspring. Presidential pardons, however, do not protect against state or local crimes.
