50 yrs after Love Story
Iconic movie couple reunited
LOVE means never having to say you’re sorry – and we make no apology for showing you the stars of Love Story 50 years on.
A little more grey and a little less fresh-faced, Ali MacGraw, 81, and Ryan O’Neal, 79, were reunited to celebrate the golden anniversary of one of Hollywood’s greatest-ever weepies.
Ryan, who has been married twice – to actresses Joanne Moore and Leigh Taylor-Young said: “It has been a fast 50
– I don’t even have those relationships with my wives. The chemistry has managed to sustain itself for 50 years.”
Love Story was a surprise box office hit in 1970, making almost £100million and landing seven Oscar nominations.
The movie, which follows the romance between rich Ivy League student Oliver and working-class Jen, made overnight stars of its leads. And they admit to being haunted by Theme From Love Story – the mournful soundtrack which won composer Francis Lai an Oscar.
Ryan, who also dated Farrah Fawcett and Barbra Streisand, said: “Every time I went to a restaurant anywhere in the world, the band would start with Love
Story. I guess you get used to it after a while. I don’t know if I ever did.” Ali cringes at Jen’s “Love means never having to say you’re sorry” line. She told Town & Country magazine: “It doesn’t mean anything. I’ve learned we can make terrible mistakes with people we love.” She would have made it, “Try not to do it again and try to clean up the hurt”. Town & Country’s December/January issue is out now.
