Botched shooting mum: We don’t know nothing

Woman and teenage son ‘just want peace’ after gun attack near home

- BY JANE HAMILTON and JON HEBDITCH

A MUM shot at with her teenage son in a botched gun attack has said they have no idea why they were targeted – and just “want peace”.

Tracey Stirrat and son Scott were in the street near their Ayrshire home when the shooter aimed at them in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Detectives are now hunting for the gunman following the bungled hit in Hawthorn Crescent, Beith.

Last night, Tracey insisted she and 19-year-old Scott were not the intended targets and have no knowledge of why they were shot at.

She said: “We don’t even know who these folk were. I don’t know anything that they did.

“I’m not getting into it. We just want peace. We don’t know nothing about nothing and that’s the truth.

“At the end of the day, as long as my son is alright, that is the main thing. I’m just so agitated and I want peace. It wasn’t even aimed at me.”

Tracey, 53, and Scott were unhurt but shaken by the incident which happened around 1.15am.

Police were called and threw up a cordon around the street while specialist search teams hunted for the bullet discharged from the unknown weapon.

Neighbours said they woke to a huge police presence in the street yesterday.

One said: “I heard some shouting in the middle of the night but just thought someone was arguing. It was only when I looked out my window this morning and seen the police, I realised something serious must have gone down. Everyone is talking about it and has their own theories as to what’s happened.”

Another local said she didn’t hear gunshots but heard loud shouting and arguing around the time of the incident.

She added: “It’s terrible. I don’t know the people involved to talk to but see them in the street. There’s all sorts of rumours flying about but I don’t know anything.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We received a report of an alleged firearm being discharged towards a woman and a man on Hawthorn Street, Beith. Nobody was injured and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”
