Ibrox is my Arfield of dreams says Scott

SCOTT ARFIELD slotted a sensational winner to send Rangers into the last 32 of the Europa League.

And he admitted he’s having the time of his life as a mainstay in the unbeaten Ibrox juggernaut.

Steven Gerrard’s men had to come from behind twice to beat Standard Liege in a rollercoaster 90 minutes that means they will top Group E if they match Benfica’s result next week.

Gers go to Poland to face Lech Poznan i n the knowledge that whatever happens, they’ve made the knockout phase for the second year in a row and Arfield, with his seventh goal of the season, was the man who separated the sides.

And he immediately targeted another win next week.

The midfielder said: “We’ve got one more match against

Poznan and this is a game we feel we can go and win again.

“I know we’re through but we thought we could win the group when the draw was made and we are going to continue to think that, so next week is a massive game again.

“I’m loving it. I always do.

“Football is the greatest gift that anybody has given me. So any time I can go on a football pitch and play – particularly at a club this size on a night like this – then they’re memorable.

“We are thriving and I’m a mainstay just now in this team but the minute you think you’re going to play in every game, that’s when somebody takes your shirt.

“That’s the mentality the gaffer has set from day one and it’s the mentality I’ve always had as a player.”

Speaking to BT Sports,

Arfield admitted the Belgians, who led at 1-0 and 2-1 before being pegged back by Connor Goldson and a James Tavernier penalty, presented huge problems for his team in the first half.

But he insists the way Rangers found a way to secure the victory underlined the winning mentality Gerrard has instilled in a side now unbeaten in 24 games in all competitions this term.

He said: “It was very tough. We played them three or four weeks ago and they are a top team. They move the ball side to side well and make you work for your result.

“That’s two games against them and we feel as if we’ve always been in a game but we’ve had two victories.

“It ’s always difficult in Europe. You can go in with a game plan but they can always flip it because the calibre of player is so good.

“But once we got into it, particularly in the second half, they had minimal chances to test Allan McGregor and we dominated the second half and got the result we wanted.”

Arfield’s comments were echoed by Gers hero Ally McCoist, who insisted Rangers deserve all the praise they’ll get for negotiating their way out of such a tough group with a game to spare. He said: “It’s a fantastic achievement. They’ve qualified with great style.

“They had two great games and two good results against a very good Benfica side. So far, it’s been a fantastic campaign.”

We felt we could win the group and we’ll continue to think that SCOTT ARFIELD ON HOPES OF TOPPING GROUP D
