Practical magic

-

LAMBORGHINIS should be mad, bold and ridiculously fast. The Urus is all of these, but it also hides a secret – it’s a really practical family SUV.

It does a good job of trying to hide this sensible side because the Urus comes with a raving 650hp twin-turbo V8 engine. That’s more than a Porsche 911 Turbo supercar and the high-riding Lambo is just as quick as it gets from a standstill to 62mph in 3.6 seconds.

The impressive numbers don’t stop there. Keep your foot to the floor on a race track and the Urus will carry on to 189mph flat out.

It also has Formula One-style brakes to slow it down again.

As it’s an SUV, the Urus comes with four-wheel drive and there are driving modes to help with traversing slippery surfaces. Not that you’d risk this in a car with a starting price of £172,500.

At first, all of this is what dominates the driving experience in the Urus. It is one of the fastest 4x4s on the planet and the 4.0-litre V8 engine makes a noise like a nest of angry dragons.

Put your foot down and it gathers in the road and spits it out the back in the same way as Lamborghini’s low-slung Aventador and Huracan supercars.

Don’t think corners faze the Urus, either, even if you do sit up high with a commanding view of the road ahead. There’s little roll in the suspension, though it’s also accomplished at smoothing out lumpy surfaces, and the steering is precise with plenty of feel.

The nimbleness of the Urus is just as well because this is a wide car. Luckily, you can see its edges from the driver’s

seat, so placing it in corners or when parking is simple. There’s also a superb parking camera system to take the worry out of reversing into a space.

All of this begins to reveal the car’s hidden practical side. The seats are supremely comfortable and with the optional heated chairs, all of its occupants can avoid the winter chills.

In the back, there’s ample room for the kids or adults, while the boot is more than up to a trip to the supermarket or ski slopes.

And who ever thought Lamborghini would make a car with a 40-20-40 split and fold rear seat for added versatility?

There are still come zany Lambo touches, like the fighter jet flip switch to start the engine and the digital dash that’s much the same as an Aventador’s.

Yet it doesn’t take long before you realise the Urus is easy to live with, if you can afford the 18.5mpg average fuel economy. It cruises quietly and offers excellent comfort, it’s easy to park and comes with all of the tech that makes driving safe and relaxing.

No wonder the Urus now accounts for two-thirds of all of Lamborghinis sold. More people are discovering the secret that Lamborghini has gone all sensible. Well, almost.
