Poet Hamish in homage to his beloved team
TRAINSPOTTING author Irvine Welsh has hailed a collection of poetry celebrating a Scottish football club.
Clydebank FC have named writer and lifelong fan Hamish MacDonald as the Bankies Bard and his first book of verse on the club is set to be published to rave reviews.
Dubbed Ki l b owi e Dreams – after the club’s old ground – it includes a poem on the late Davie Cooper, considered to be the greatest ever Bankie.
Hibs f an We l sh described the work as “truly the stuff from which dreams are made”, adding: “You can see, hear, smell and taste not only Kilbowie but all of Scottish football in those verses.”
Playwright, novelist and poet Hamish penned Kilbowie Dreams to celebrate the history and progress of the club and the town of Clydebank. It follows its years as a senior club to its resurrection at junior level and now as part of the West of Scotland Football League.
There are verses dedicated to club legends cup final moments, the experience of away days, the joys of victory and agony of defeat.
Still Game actor Sanjeev Kohli also praised Hamish’s work, saying: “All of football is in life. And all of life is in football. And it’s all here in this collection.”
Off The Ball radio show host and St Johnstone fan Stuart Cosgrove, added: “Clydebank have been St Johnstone’s bogey team throughout most of my life. But I recommend this collection of poetry to you.”
