Rogue squib ruins festive season

A MUM-OF-TWO says her family’s Christmas has been ruined after a rogue firework sparked a huge blaze at their home.

Jacqueline Cummings and her childen, from Glasgow, were left “traumatised” after a firework exploded in their garden and ignited a huge blaze on November 3.

The fire destroyed their home extension and entire garden, including the kids’ bikes and sentimental objects.

As a result, Jacqueline says her children have been left unable to decorate their home for Christmas, and fears more people may set off fireworks during the festive season.

The 44- year- old hairdresser, her daughter Taylor, 24, and 12-year-old son Zac, had to flee from their house in Springboig, after screaming neighbours alerted them to the fire at about 10pm that night.

Husband Stephen, a builder, was out walking their pug Alfie at the time but raced home when he saw the orange glow and smoke above the house. The blaze took hold of the garden storage unit where the family kept old photographs, baby videos, and the children’s bikes and toys.

The inferno also destroyed their car which was parked in the driveway.

Jacqueline, 42, told the Record: “Never in a million years did we think something like this would happen to us.

“I was sleeping in the extension and my two children were sleeping upstairs, thank goodness neighbours came to get us out. I was in utter disbelief and panic.

“We all got out safely and Stephen rushed back home. But we’ve all been left traumatised and terrified that this could happen again. My daughter Taylor is autistic and it’s taken her a really long time to get over it too.”

The mum urged Scots not to set off fireworks in the run-up to Hogmanay over fears another family could end up in the same position.
