I WANT THRILLS NOT DULL FRIENDS

- Beverley Knight

The singer – best known for her chart toppers such as Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda and roles in West End shows – has just recorded a new single for Brit Christmas film The Loss Adjuster. Bev Be tells us all about her latest record, he her Christmas fifil film faves and distaste d for cult c sitcom Friends

WhWhat are your ffavouritei shows?

I love Power [on Netflix.] I tend to like gangster type thriller shows and movies. Anything Mafia related, or anything like Power – a drug dealer who’s desperately trying to go straight – that’s my kind of genre. I really like dark things. I sound like a real strange fish, but you can’t understand how one human could be so inhumane to another without empathy and that fascinates the hell out of me.

Are you a binge-watcher?

If I really like something I will binge watch the hell out of it. I’m not someone who has a lot of time to sit and watch things, so if I’ve got a free day, you best believe I’m putting on a box set and I’m watching episode after episode.

Anything you wouldn’t watch?

There’s going to be a lot of people who’ll hate me for saying this but I’ve never watched Friends. It just doesn’t appeal to me to watch it. It kind of passed me by.

Do you and your husband James ever disagree over what to watch?

James pulls a face at anything that looks like a period drama. But I will pull a face when he puts on one of those American shows where they’re doing up cars.

Have you got any bad TV watching habits?

A naughty habit is I’ll sit eating something, like in the cinema. So I’ve really tried to train myself to do it because there’s nothing worse than a crunchy snack. James will tell me to shush, but then I’ll get my own back because James is a commentary man, so I’ll be like, ‘James, shut up!’

What’s your guilty TV pleasure?

I am really a nerd so I’ll watch anything that’s historically nerdy. When Mary Beard is on, I’ll watch those kind of things and it feels like I’m back at school. In the past I’ve told James off for watching TOWIE and then found myself watching TOWIE.

Are you big into Christmas films?

When Die Hard is on, I’ve seen it 50,000 times, but I’ve got to watch Bruce Willis. I also love It’s a Wonderful Life. I wish I could have met Jimmy Stewart. Christmas is just so great.

What made you want to record A Christmas Wish for new flick The Loss Adjuster?

Initially I put up resistance, as most new Christmas songs just don’t stand up next to the classics. But this was a fantastic pop song and I was happy to record it.

Would you want to star in a Christmas film?

I just wrapped on a movie. The new Cinderella reboot, so I’m on that journey already. I can’t tell you anything at the moment, but it is a massive all-star cast with Billie Porter, James Corden and Camilla Cabello.

Have you got any music coming out soon?

I like dark things. How one human can be so inhumane to another without empathy fascinates the hell out of me.

I’m working on solo material, which is really good fun, but who knows with lockdown when it will be. But when you do what I do, it’s just in you. You never stop. So look out for new music – it will come. You can watch The Loss Adjuster in selected cinemas in Wales and Scotland and on DVD and on demand.
