Swiss can’t miss Benji any more
MICKY MELLON reckons if Switzerland have a better goalie than Benjamin Siegrist then they are absolutely blessed.
The big Swiss No.1, who will start against Kilmarnock tomorrow, added to his growing reputation as he made a string of stops to help Dundee United fight back for a point against Hibs at the weekend.
Mellon believes if Siegrist keeps up his current form then he has to catch the eye of national coach Vladimir Petkovic.
Switzerland currently have Yann Sommer and Yvon Mvgo but the United boss reckons Siegrist, 28, has what it takes to build on his single Under-21 cap.
Mellon said: “All players need to have ambitions and aim as high as they can. Switzerland have some really, really talented goalkeepers.
“But what I would say is that if they have better goalkeepers than Benji then they are absolutely blessed, aren’t they?
“Benji works very hard at his craft. When called upon you have to be very good to beat him.
“He has done terrifically for us when called upon. He is already playing at the highest level, he is playing in the Premiership. He is playing at a great football club, enjoying his football, and long may that continue.”
United are still in the top half but teams in the bottom six are breathing down their necks. Mellon reckons his side have a good chance of winning the festive home clashes against Kilmarnock and Motherwell.
He said: “Of course, every game we try and pick up points. We won’t rush ahead of ourselves.
“We will concentrate on Wednesday and it will be one day and one game at a time.
“We don’t feel any pressure, honestly, we just get on with looking after our own business.
“Like I’ve said many times, we just need to concentrate on what we do. We just look after ourselves and try to be the best we can be.”
