I have not been fair to hitmen

- BYB FRASER MACKIE

MICKY MELLON admitted he hasn’t been fair to his frfrontmen after watching ththem break scoring droughts in style.

The Tannadice boss has hahanded Lawrence Shankland anand Marc McNulty some totough shifts in recent months while he worked on the priority of making United dedefensively sound.

Unleashed as a papartnershipar last night and susupportedup by two attacking wwidwide men, they both scored to beat Killie.

Mellon said: “It was special to ssee both my strikers scoscoring. They’ve suffered at timtimes because they play well as a pair but we felt we wawanted some defensive sosolidity.

“That meant that did not aallow us to have two sstrikers and wide men in tthe team.

“But we’ve worked hard oon being solid and the boys deldelivered on that. Now the strstrikers have scored two good goals and could’ve scored more.

“They are both very clever players, well-schooled and they enjoy playing alongside each other.

“As much as possible we want to try to do that but we have to be respectful of the opposition we’re up against sometimes and we can’t play with two up.

“But we did that here and it was great to watch. I’m old-fashioned and I love watching wide men and strikers linking up like that.”

The top-flight newcomers are exceeding expectations in the top six. Mellon added: ‘We’re up to fifth but won’t take our foot off the gas.”

Killie boss Alex Dyer, meanwhile, is troubled by his team’s scoring struggles. He said: “It’s worrying. We know we’ve a tough period coming up – four games against teams around us.

“We’ve got to try to get as many points as we can from them, simple as that.”
