MOYO’S GOING FOR BROKE
Accies ace targets push for the top six
DAVID MOYO broke his Hamilton duck – and his hand – in last year’s festive Lanarkshire derby.
This time around he’s looking at breaking new ground by making a stunning push for the top six.
Accies may be bottom of the table going into today’s latest derby instalment against managerless Motherwell.
But they are only nine points off the top half and Moyo insists there’s no reason why Brian Rice’s side shouldn’t aim high.
A win today would see them jump above their arch rivals.
And the 26-year-old, who notched the winner in the derby 12 months ago, said: “That was one of my best days at Hamilton, probably just behind scoring the winner against Rangers at Ibrox.
“To score in the derby is a great memory to have and it doesn’t get much better than being the hero. It was an unbelievable feeling.
“I remember breaking my hand for half of the game. I was struggling not to think about it. I don’t even know how I did it. I just remember looking down and my hand was broken.
“Then I was able to score the winner, which was great.
“But straight after the game I had to go to the hospital to get it looked at.
“I’d love to score against Motherwell again but maybe not break my hand this time.
“This is a massive game and we just want to get a good result. We want to start climbing the table now.
“We have managed to keep ourselves in the league over the years and we believe we won’t be in trouble. You have to have that belief but it’s time to progress, not be waiting until the last game of the season to know if we’re staying up or not.
“We have to kick on a bit more and finish a bit higher.
“We aren’t thinking about being bottom, we are thinking about going up the way.
“Why can’t we look to finish in the top six? Every team has goals and you have to chase something.
“We plan to start the year on a positive, get a good result and then carry that on throughout the rest of the year. We want to build some momentum.”
Moyo is loving life at Accies. Rice plucked the towering striker from non-league St Albans City almost 18 months ago and he’s gone from the sixth tier of English football to the top flight in Scotland as well as international honours with Zimbabwe.
Getting the call for the Africa Cup of Nations double-header with Algeria in November was the icing on the cake.
Moyo added: “The past 12 months have been tough for everyone but at the club we have just tried to keep our spirits up and get through it.
“I am playing football every day and I am lucky to have the best job in the world, I have nothing to complain about.
“I was picked for Zimbabwe as well. It was unbelievable, one of the best experiences I have ever had. I want to stay involved for my country so I have to keep producing for Hamilton.
“There are loads of incentives for me personally and collectively as a squad.”
