If Scott signs for Gers he will still play

-

opened talks with Dons chairman Dave Cormack to see if a deal can be done in this window.

McInnes has resigned himself to losing his star but as long as Wright is at Pittodrie he will remain a central part of his plans.

McInnes, who takes his team to Livingston tonight, said: “Rangers are a club interested in Scott on a pre-contract. They came through the front door, which I’m grateful for.

“I spoke to Steven yesterday and there have been discussions at boardroom level. They’ve let us know he is a player they would be keen on – on a pre-contract. As is their right, as it is any club’s right, and as it is Scott’s right.

“For me he’s a key player in the team. In an ideal world you’ll get a good offer for him from wherever, whether it’s Rangers or anyone else, and we move on and get something in return for all our work with Scott.

“He’s been with the club since he was eight and that would be the best-case scenario for everyone.

“But at the same time he’s a key player and if we don’t get a good offer then he remains part of the team to try to achieve what we want to achieve.”

There is interest from several other clubs, including Oxford, but Rangers are the only team who have indicated they would like to do business in this window.

A deal is likely to be struck as it could free up funds or help wipe out the outstanding fee that is owed to Rangers as part of the Ross McCrorie deal.

McInnes added: “I don’t expect that to happen this week. He’s in the squad for Livingston and we continue through January.

“I said last week there won’t be players coming in. If someone moves – whether that’s Scott or someone else – that might change things.”
