Champs is still a goer for Glasgow next month

-

UK ATHLETICS chiefs insist next month’s British Indoor Championships will go ahead in Glasgow.

Slated for the Emirates Arena on February 20-21, the event has been bankrolled by funding from UK Sport to put special testing and social distancing procedures in place that would allow it to take place behind closed doors.

More than 160 athletes have already signed up, including Scots Lynsey Sharp and Andy Butchart, despite fears of a call-off.

While it is understood UKA will reconsider their stance if March’s European Indoors in Poland is shelved, the plan is to press on with all precautions in place.

A UKA spokeswoman said: “It is still going ahead and we have the money from UK Sport to enable us to run it in a safe environment.” BASKETBALL:Gareth Murray is still torn between his playing duties and coaching Glasgow Rocks after two months of the BBL season.

The forward, 36, has signalled he will increase his time on court for the bottom side when they host Sheffield tomorrow.

But Murray has stuck with his plan to persist with a reserve role, even though young replacement Fraser Malcolm is struggling.

He said: “I have to find a balance. Ideally I play 15-20 minutes. But that means Isa Brandon or someone else has to play without picking up too many fouls.

“The main thing is everyone is contributing to a much-improved performance, which hopefully puts us to a place where we’re getting wins.” CRICKET: Joe Root’s 13-month wait for a Test century, the longest of his career, ended with an unbeaten 168 on day two of the first test against Sri Lanka.

That was more than half of the team’s stumps total – 320 for four – and the bulk of a 185-run lead.

Root said: “Being a bit more ruthless, a bit more stubborn and trusting my defence a little bit more at times has paid off.”
