Father’s fury at inquest

- BY TOM WILKINSON

More than 9500 coronaviruslinked deaths have been recorded in Scotland, figures reveal.

Statistics from the National records of Scotland (NrS) show 9580 people have died with confirmed or suspected Covid-19.

The figures show 227 deaths relating to Covid-19 were registered between February 22 and 28, down 64 on the previous week.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Government’s daily coronavirus briefing showed Scotland recorded 35 deaths from Covid-19 and 543 positive tests in the past 24 hours.

It brings the death toll of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days to 7371.

CADBURY Creme Egg fans who like a pint now have the ultimate tipple – a beer that tastes like their favourite choc treat.

To mark the Creme Egg’s 50th anniversary, Cadbury has launched a limited edition Golden Goo-Beer-Lee Creme Stout.

Costing a hefty £10 for two 440ml cans, they are as rare as hen’s teeth as the first batch sold out within minutes of going on sale online yesterday.

THE father of a Scots teacher found dead wrapped in his duvet said there was no conclusive evidence it was his son, an inquest was told.

However, the coroner was confident to complete the hearing into the death of diabetic Ramsay Urquhart, whose decomposing body was found in his east London home by police in April 2019.

His father, Murdo Urquhart, from Keith, Banffshire, had expressed concerns about the Metropolitan Police’s inquiries.

The inquest, held at the family’s request away from London, concluded Ramsay died from natural causes, aged 33.

Murdo told the hearing: “I am yet to see any evidence that it was Ramsay.”

But coroner Andrew Tweddle, sitting in Sunderland, said it was likely Ramsay died on April 15, 2019, and was found by police three days later, wrapped in a duvet, fully clothed, in his warm flat.

His body decomposed and bodily fluids pooled, causing discolouration which could have been seen, wrongly, to be bruising, the inquest heard.

Police had been called to the flat in Clements Road, East Ham, amid concerns for his welfare and found him face down.

Murdo said he will now consider seeking a judicial review of the inquest.

WITH teeth like piranhas they drive you bananas…

A line from an old Kenneth McKellar song – and he wasn’t talking about The Bee Gees.

Nope, he meant The Midges and – bad news, folks – thanks to a lower level of pollution during the pandemic, we’re set for a breeding boom this summer.

And experts reckon there were 139BILLION midges in the Highlands & Islands LAST year!

Every tiny midge can bite like the love-child of Mike Tyson and Esther Rantzen and, alas, in the words of McKellar’s brilliant little ditty: “If ye manage to kill yin, another half million are ready to come to the wake…”

With Scottish staycations the only real holiday option this summer, that’s exactly what I’m going to do.

Stay in Scotland – in the hoose.
