McGarvey: My chance at Liverpool with Kenny

REJECTION AT HEROES RANGERS

- BY ALISON McCONNELL

FRANK McGARVEY has revealed that one of his greatest regrets was not staying at Anfield long enough to forge a career with Kenny Dalglish.

The duo did, however, play together in a famous 1979 night at Hampden when 18-year-old Argentina icon Diego Maradona announced himself to the world.

Striker McGarvey, who signed for Liverpool that year, recalled: “I remember thinking that I wasn’t a bad player and then I saw Maradona play and had to think differently.

“Seriously, though, I should have scored two goals that night. And both chances were created by Kenny. I don’t think anyone has to say it – everybody knows that Kenny was just a brilliant, world-class striker.”

McGarvey moved to Anfield from St Mirren but found his path to the first team blocked by Dave Johnson. He said: “I was top scorer for the second team but just as I was chapping on the door, Dave played out of his skin for a season. I think he scored 38 goals.

“I always remember Graeme Souness, Terry McDermott and Kenny telling me to be patient but I really struggled with it. I was playing in empty stadiums and just didn’t enjoy it.”

McGarvey, now 64, left for Celtic in 1980. He added: “When you look back and see the partnership that Kenny went on to have with Ian Rush, you do wonder.

“They scored so many goals but Kenny made as many as he scored.”

”You always dream of playing for the team you support. When Rangers don’t take you, it’s not the end of the world. It just means that when you later play against them and score, it makes it a bit more special.”

GRAHAM ALEXANDER is delighted by Tyler Magloire’s response to a Premiership baptism of fire at Motherwell.

The on-loan Blackburn Rovers defender has helped the Steelmen keep successive clean sheets since their derby defeat by Hamilton Accies.

Well boss Alexander said: “For a young player coming into a massive derby and how it went, to show the character to stand up and come back.

“I had every confidence in him. We know his qualities and for such a young boy who had little experience at first-team level, his last two performances have been absolutely magnificent.”

SCOTTISH football’s lower leagues are scrambling for an emergency solution after some clubs admitted they won’t be able to complete the season.
