Pyramid in danger with no play-off

- By alaN MaRSHall

LOWLAND LEAGUE chief George Fraser insists it would do “untold damage” to Scottish football’s pyramid system for the SPFL to refuse his clubs and Highland League outfits a play-off again.

Fraser revealed he has received no reassurances from the SPFL that the shoot-out between the 10th-placed team in League Two and either the Highland or Lowland champs will go ahead.

When last term was controversially curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic, Brechin City were saved from facing either Brora Rangers or Kelty Hearts to hold on to their league status after the SPFL scrapped all play-offs.

And Fraser said: “After last year, we believe it is unthinkable that there again could be no play-off involving the team at the bottom of League Two.

“Going for a second year without a play-off game would do untold damage to the integrity of the pyramid, in my opinion.

“It is vital for Scottish football’s pyramid structure that th ese crucial play-offs go ahead.”

JACK HENDRY has opened up on his Celtic frustrations under Neil Lennon and insists he needs regular football next season.

The 25-year-old, left, has been starring on loan in Belgium with Champions League-chasing Oostende and is dreaming of a Scotland recall in time for this summer’s Euros.

What happens beyond then is up in the air following the departure of Lennon and the prospect of trying to impress a new manager back in Glasgow.

Hendry still has another year on his Parkhead deal but, with a permanent switch to Oostende a possibility, his form has caught the eye of Brighton, Sheffield United, Burnley, Wolves and Werder Bremen.

Having made just 15 league appearances for Celtic since joining in January 2018, the former

FRUSTRATING TIME Lenny Dundee stopper is relishing the game time in Belgium.

He said: “I’m open to anything. It’s vital wherever I choose next season, I need to play every week to continue my development.

“If Celtic want to keep me, that’s something they would need to make a decision on. It’s frustrating I was never given the opportunity to show what I could do (under Lennon).

“The way I’m performing, I could have a real good impact. It’s not been nice seeing the way the season has panned out.”

After finishing second bottom last season, Oostende sit fourth in the top flight and Hendry has been a key performer.

He just hopes his form has not gone unnoticed by Scotland boss Steve Clarke.

He said: “I’m desperate to put on that jersey again.

“Scotland have been playing with the back three and I’ve been part of the same system here. It would really suit my style.”
