Pair perfect match after ‘lucky break’

- BY ASHLEY PEMBERTON

A FOOTBALLER who fell in love with the nurse who treated him for a broken ankle has celebrated 60 years of marriage to her.

Trevor Meredith, 84, became part of Burnley folklore when his winner against Man City saw the Clarets crowned kings of England in 1960.

But his real “lucky break” came in a reserve game a year earlier when he suffered the injury that led to him meeting Eileen, 79.

The couple married in 1961 and celebrated their diamond anniversary on Monday.

Dad-of two Trevor said: “I was at the hospital where Eileen worked and I was instantly attracted.

“We got talking and things just developed from there. I still had my leg in plaster for the first date.”

SCOTS Tory leader Douglas Ross “deeply regrets” making comments about Gypsy Travellers when he was a rookie MP.

He was slammed in 2017 when asked what his priority would be if he was prime minister for a day.

In an online interview, the Moray MP caused outrage when he replied he would impose “tougher enforcement against Gypsy Travellers”.

He later tweeted that he wanted action against those who “flout local planning procedures with illegal encampments”.

Traveller and human rights groups hit out at the MP for attacking an already persecuted minority.

Ross said the answer “still comes up” on his social media today. He told right-wing think-tank Bright Blue: “I deeply regret my answer and the way it was interpreted.

“I said it was a big local issue and it continues to be a big issue here in Moray every summer. But it’s not something I should have answered as being my top priority if I had one day as prime minister.”

LORD Alan Sugar has told fans The Apprentice will return this year.

Viewers felt let down last spring when it emerged that the BBC1 show was being pulled because of the pandemic.

But the tycoon said the production team is “fighting back” to get the show on air and work has begun on the 16th run.

He added that they are determined to beat “this bloody terrible virus”.

Sugar, 73, added: “We have one of the best teams in the business working around the clock. I can assure you they will do their absolute damnedest to get the show back on TV.

“The return of the programme will show the world that Britain is back on track and open for business once again.”
