NICK: I’LL GO TO WART O EARN MY SPOT BACK

- BY DAVID BARNES

NICK GRIGG insists he isn’t content with being a super-sub – and has set his sights on regaining a starting berth in Glasgow Warriors’ midfield.

The 28-year-old made a huge impact off the bench for Warriors in Saturday’s 31-20 win over Zebre.

He set up Jamie Dobie for the second try, which pulled Glasgow back into the match after a nightmare end to the first half, then burst clear to score the fourth try which secured the bonus point win.

The victory puts Warriors back in the frame for third in Conference A of the Pro14, with Friday’s home clash against Ospreys likely to be make-or-break in the race to qualify for the Champions Cup next season.

Grigg said: “I’ve had a fair bit of energy over the last couple weeks and felt I had a point to prove at training.

“I came into the game a bit nervous but it brought the best out of me and it was good to get the win.

“I had to prove I deserve a place in the team – in the last few games I was maybe a bit comfortable with where I was.”

Grigg revealed boss Danny Wilson had delivered a few home truths after dropping him last month – and hopes he has shown his gaffer the message has been taken on board.

He said: “It was just a polite, friendly conversation, it didn’t get heated and I can see it from Danny’s point of view as well as my own.

“You get frustrated but there’s no hard feelings. I just got a bit of a kick up the bum and realised I had to step it up a bit.

“I’ve been doing that at training and mentally I feel good. So when I got out there, I brought the impact that the coaches wanted.

“I started the season really well but in that Exeter game before Christmas we didn’t perform as a team and in the Edinburgh games I didn’t see much of the ball.

“That comes down to outside circumstances but it also comes down to me wanting it and being hungry to get my hands on it.

“I’m just pleased to have shown what I can do.”

Meanwhile, fixture congestion means that Edinburgh’s Pro14 clash against Benetton is not likely to be played until mid-April – at least two weeks after the league’s play-off Grand Final.

The match was scheduled to be played at Murrayfield yesterday but was called off due to a positive Covid test in the Benetton camp.

Neither side can make it into the play-offs this year – but Edinburgh still have an outside chance of qualifying for next year’s Champions Cup.
