We turned into basket cases over title quest

- BY DAVID McCARTHY

JERMAIN DEFOE revealed Michael Jordan’s Netflix documentary “The Last Dance” helped Rangers end Celtic’s title stranglehold.

The striker believes the Light Blues’ success was fuelled by the inspiration of watching the basketball legend’s story during lockdown in the close season.

Defoe said: “When we came back in pre-season I sensed a different focus.

“That focus where we don’t want to come second, we want to be first.

“Everyone came back talking about the Michael Jordan documentary ‘The Last Dance’. When you watched that, you got goosebumps. We said, ‘This has got to be our season we have to do it’.

“I thought this has got to be our season and 55 league titles is unreal.

“It is something the fans have been craving, so it is not just for the players and the staff – it is for them. I hope they are happy now.”

The 38-year-old has enjoyed a stellar career but is now savouring winning a title for the first time.

Defoe told Rangers TV: “I have dedicated my whole career and my whole life for these kinds of moments.

“That is the thing that has kept me going.

“People always say, ‘What has kept you going?’ and, ‘How do you stay motivated?’. It is for moments like this.

“Especially with this group of players, the staff, everyone that has been involved, it has been a team effort. You will never forget these moments and it is so special when you share a dressing room with these kinds of people.

“The manager said it probably won’t sink in yet but when it does, it will be unbelievable. It is emotional, the first thing I did was FaceTime my mum.

“It has been an unbelievable season.”
