Micky: My boys could have got a huge win
MICKY MELLON insists Dundee United should have sunk Celtic to stay in the top-six hunt.
The Tannadice boss reckons his team could have grabbed success over the deposed champions.
The Hoops dominated the majority of the contest yesterday and United No.1 Benjamin Siegrist was outstanding with a string of superb stops.
However, Mellon pointed to the fact his team hung in there and started to create opportunities of their own in the final quarter of the contest, having also had openings through Ian Harkes and Marc McNulty before the interval.
He said: “The players were terrific. With 25 minutes to go, we were coming up the stand side rails like lightning to take it and at times we had to show that wee bit of quality. But we will learn.
“A wee bit of calmness and composure would have sealed the deal for us but it is disappointing that we have not got the fight next week for the top six.
“I can only be proud of the boys. I am not going to criticise.
“We will come away and say we expect you to score there and be better in those moments. The players will accept that and go and work hard.
“You see the young players who came on in the end, the young players who are in and around the bench as well, we have a lot of good talent here.
“We have six games left. We will go and attack them and try to move Dundee United forward.”
Mellon accepted that Celtic had the majority of the possession but said: “It is Celtic. It is not ‘let’s get on the line and have a go-kart race’. They have unbelievable talent, we have a group of players who are working hard.
“We coach them and it is a triumph for coaching and hard work from a group of players who went out there with the right mentality to try to get a result.
“Sometimes you have to celebrate that as well, not just go on about Celtic had this and that.
“I never get carried away with teams not being good enough to score. If you are not good enough to put it in the net you are not good enough.”
