I did not want to be alive

SUICIDAL THOUGHTS

- PRINCE CHARLES

DURING one of the most emotional parts of the interview, Meghan opened up about how her treatment by the royals had left her feeling suicidal.

She claimed she was forced to surrender her keys, driver’s licence and passport on joining the family.

The Duchess described approaching Harry and the Royal Family seeking help with persistent suicidal thoughts during her pregnancy.

She said: “I just didn’t want to be alive any more. And that was a very clear and real and frightening constant thought.”

Meghan said she later asked a senior royal about seeking help and was told that would not be possible because it “wouldn’t be good for the institution”. Just before attending the premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s Totem show in January 2019, she had told Harry she “didn’t want to be alive any more”.

Talking about the event, she told Oprah: “[Harry] was gripping my hand and it was ‘OK, an intermission’s coming, the lights are about to come on, everyone’s looking at us again’… and you had to be ‘on’ again.” ■■You can speak to Samaritans on 116 123.

HARRY told of his own tensions with his family, revealing he felt “really let down” by his father, Prince Charles, who had stopped taking his calls.

The Duke opened up about his relationship with the Prince of Wales as he discussed the couple’s initial move to Canada.

Before the Sussexes made their plans public, Harry said he had three chats with the Queen and two with his dad “before he stopped taking my calls.” Harry said Charles asked him to put it in writing, which he did, including specifics like the date they planned to make the announcement.

When Oprah asked Harry why Charles stopped taking his calls, the prince replied after a long pause: “Because by that point, I took matters into my own hands.

“I needed to do this for my family. I’ve got to do something for my own mental health and my wife’s. And for Archie’s, because I could see where this is headed.”

He said the alleged lack of support from his father was particularly painful as Charles had gone through “something similar” with Diana.

“He knows what pain feels like,” Harry said, “but at the same time, I will always love him. I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship.”

Charles has since started taking his calls, Harry added.
