Neilson’s hopeful Irving commits his future to Jambos
ROBBIE NEILSON admits the ball is in Andy Irving’s court over a new deal after confirming Hearts are still waiting for his answer.
A back and forth has been going on for a while now, with the Jambos making an offer and their midfielder coming back with a counter, as they try to reach an agreement that will keep the 20-year-old in Gorgie beyond the summer.
Fans are keen to see one of their own tied down after an impressive breakthrough over the last two seasons.
Neilson wants the Scotland Under-21 star to put pen to paper but hopes to see him still doing the business on the park during what can often be a distracting time for players whose futures are up in the air.
The Hearts boss said: “We’ve offered Andy a contract and we’re still waiting to hear back from the agent and the player.
“We’ve put it there, we think it’s a good offer and hopefully he will accept. Ultimately it’s down to the player and the agent to decide now. Andy is still performing on a Saturday so, from my perspective, that’s the most important thing for him.
“He’s shown a maturity to concentrate on training and games as well. Hopefully we will come to an agreement.”
But Neilson admits defeat in signing a right-back as cover for Michael Smith.
