sport@dailyrecord.co.uk the quarter-finals, McGregor said: “We have the belief but we’re up against a good side so it will be difficult.

“We want to do it obviously. You go into every game, especially at this club, wanting to win it and every competition.”

Gers strike legend McCoist, speaking on BT Sport, was far more effusive about McGregor’s save and insisted he must be signed on a new deal for next season.

He said: “To get to it is one thing, to hold on to it is another thing entirely. The header was remarkable, the save even better.

“Listen, I’ll be staggered if he’s not at the club next year.

“He deserves a new deal first and foremost but the manager is an intelligent man and if he’s got a keeper playing at that level week in week out then age is no barrier.

“It’s not a barrier at all to Allan. He made a remarkable save to deny Leigh Griffiths at Ibrox but that tonight is taking it to another level.

“The ball is actually behind him, it’s a phenomenal save.

“That save is as good as I’ve seen in years. It gets better every time you see it.

“It’s gone from one of the best saves this season to one of the best saves ever. I’m thinking of Banks, obviously, it’s up there.”

Gerrard was delighted to return home with a result that gives his side a real chance to make the quarter-final – and on the back of a momentous weekend of title celebrations, he admitted Rangers had to show real resilience.

The Gers boss said: “We were coming up against a team with a fantastic home record, domestically unbeaten.

“So we knew the challenge was big against a powerful team who like to play at a high intensity.

“We needed to be ready for that but after the week we had it was quite tough. Credit to the players,

out and hope it doesn’t go in and it never so happy days
