Commons touch from Tories is ‘laughable’
TORY Ministers have been mocked for suggesting the Commons could sit in Scotland for a fortnight in an effort to counter support for independence.
The SNP said it was proof Boris Johnson knows a referendum is unavoidable in the event of a Holyrood majority for the party.
Ahead of the Prime Minister’s virtual appearance at the online Scottish Conservative conference this weekend, one idea floated by Downing Street is that MPs from the Commons could sit in Scotland for a fortnight every September.
One problem, the SNP said, is that the Holyrood parliament will be fully occupied by MSPs during that time.
Pete Wishart MP said the idea of touring the Commons was “laughable”.
Wishart said: “Not content with taking away powers and funding from the Scottish Parliament, Rees-Mogg and the Westminster Tories are now setting their sights on taking over the building itself – even though MSPs will be sitting.
“The idea is not only utterly laughable but it demonstrates just how out of touch the Tories are – their arrogance when it comes to Scotland literally knows no bounds
“It’s clear that the only way to properly protect our Parliament and powers is to become an independent country.”
Ruth Davidson is due to tell the conference that Scotland has “passed peak Nat” and claim support for the SNP is on the decline.
Davidson, who leads the party at Holyrood, is due to say that an SNP majority at Holyrood is not a “nailedon certainty”.
Ahead of her speech on Saturday, she said: “Over the last few weeks, something in Scotland has changed. We’ve passed peak Nat and, more and more, Scotland is saying, ‘Enough.’”
