Collette’s family fight on over sex register as monster released
A SCOTS child killer has walked free from prison – 35 years after raping and murdering a schoolgirl.
Adam Stein, 61, was jailed for life for abducting, raping and suffocating Collette Gallacher, six, in Corby, Northamptonshire, in 1986.
He was released on parole last week under strict conditions. Stein, from Glasgow, will remain in England but has been banned from entering Northamptonshire or going near Collette’s relatives – who had been fighting his release and to have his name added to the sex offenders’ register.
Collette’s sister Claire Holmes, 29, told the Record the family were informed of Stein’s freedom by a family liaison officer, saying: “Stein was released from prison to the south-east of England.”
The killer snatched Collette as she went to catch the bus to school and lured her into his flat with crisps. Collete’s body was found in Stein’s loft five days after she disappeared.
Stein, who was previously quizzed over a sex attack in Scotland, has not been pictured since he was jailed. He was released in 2016 but reincarcerated after 14 months for breaching his parole.
Collette’s family issued a warning to Scots in the Record last month that he may return to Glasgow and appealed to anyone with information on Stein’s past to come forward. Collette’s other sister Lauren said: “He’ll always be a risk – he’s a sexual deviant.”
Stein was released on a tag to an undisclosed address last Monday and is banned from any contact with young girls.
The family have vowed to continue fighting the fact he is not a Registered Sex Offender. Claire said of the tough restrictions on Stein: “It’s great news and an extra level of protection but we’re still going to pursue our campaign. We’re not going to stop yet.”
The Parole Board said: “No prisoner will be released if their risk management plan isn’t robust enough or license conditions aren’t stringent enough.”
