Farke’s really proud players were stinging like Canaries

-

DANIEL FARKE hailed his side’s battling spirit as they surged 10 points clear at the top of the Championship.

The Norwich boss saw his Canaries fight back from goal a goal down at Sheffield Wednesday to run out 2-1 winners.

He said: “It was the best win of the season. It’s a spotlight game and it’s the type of game you want to win.

“It was a difficult game against a highly motivated side. They led after a few moments and they have many experienced players.

“To respond in the manner we did was amazing. It’s up to the players to deliver on the pitch and they wanted to turn this game around with their concentration, tactical discipline, commitment and spirit. It’s a really proud day.”

The leaders were rocked when Jordan Rhodes gave Wednesday a surprise seventh-minute lead from six yards out after Barry Bannan’s freekick was blocked by the wall and Joey Pelupessy’s follow-up strike was not properly cleared.

Teemu Pukki blasted Norwich level from eight yards after an hour and Todd Cantwell secured an eighth successive win for the Canaries 16 minutes later as he curled in a fine effort from inside the box.

Watford remain second thanks to a stoppage-time free-kick winner from Adam Masina as they sank Cardiff 2-1.

Cardiff took an early lead when Francisco Sierralta turned Josh Murphy’s cross into his own net.

The Hornets levelled immediately as Nathaniel Chalobah drove home but Watford won it four minutes into added time when Masina’s thumping free-kick flashed past Dillon Phillips.

The loss was Mick McCarthy’s first as Cardiff boss.

He said: “Poor old Dillon’s saying he should have saved it. If he’s saying that I’m not going to disagree with him.”

Third-placed Swansea City stayed level on points with Watford as Conor Hourihane’s early goal earned them a 1-0 win over Luton at Kenilworth Road.

Boss Steve Cooper said: “Luton don’t lose many here. Throw in the pitch and the wind and it had the makings of not being a pretty game.”
