KIDS LINK TO PROTECTION NHS LOUISA JORDAN TO CLOSE

- BY LUCINDA CAMERON BY CONOR RIORDAN

ADULTS living with children were at no greater risk of testing positive for Covid-19 than those without – even when schools were open last year, according to research.

The study of more than 300,000 adults also suggests the risk of testing positive with Covid-19 was lower for adults living in a household with a child up to the age of 11 than it was for those without young children. University of Glasgow researchers believe the findings provide evidence children may have a protective effect against infection at homes and say it warrants further study.

THE NHS Louisa Jordan hospital is to shut by the end of March without having to treat a single coronavirus patient.

The temporary facility in Glasgow was set up to support Scotland’s response to the pandemic in April and has since carried out 32,000 healthcare appointments and vaccinated more than 170,000 people.

It will close on March 31 without treating a single coronavirus patient, with the mass vaccination centre relocating to the SSE Hydro.

Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said: “I want to thank everyone who has supported the establishment of NHS Louisa Jordan. Thanks to the continued efforts of the public, we have been able to maintain capacity in our hospitals and use this facility to remobilise health services and treat patients whose healthcare had to be cancelled last year due to Covid-19.”

AS A former head of the Crown Prosecution Service, Keir Starmer knows no credible case can be made to oppose Drug Consumption Rooms (DCRs). He knows the futility involved in slapping fines and jail sentences on people addicted to drugs. The case for the implementation of a pilot DCR in Glasgow has been made many times and has widespresd support.

Here are five benefits of DCRs: 1 No one has ever died in a DCR. 2 There are almost 200 DCRs in 12 countries – none of which have drug problems on the scale of Scotland’s. None have shut down after opening because the benefits are so clear. 3 DCRs get people into treatment. Scotland has struggled to get proper treatment for those who are hardest to reach. Rough sleepers, those with mental health issues and dealing with early life trauma are also the most likely to die. 4 No DCR means streets, backstreets and alleys strewn with thousands of needles and injecting paraphernalia. DCRs don’t result in people taking more drugs. They just do it safer and put their kit in bins. 5 Injecting drugs leads to syringe sharing and blood borne infections spreading like wildfire. Glasgow has suffered an alarming rise on HIV rates – all down to street drug taking. This wouldn’t happened if properly funded safe spaces were in place.
