ASN teacher numbers fall

CHILDREN with additional support needs (ASN) require more resources in school, the Scottish Children’s Services Coalition has warned.

The number of ASN teachers has fallen to 2811 in 2020, from 3389 in 2012, while there has been a 92 per cent rise in ASN pupils.

TEN people including a police officer have been killed after a stand-off with a gunman at a supermarket.

Ahmad Alissa, who was captured alive, is alleged to have opened fire at the King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, shortly before 3pm on Monday. The 21-year-old was charged with ten counts of first-degree murder yesterday.

The victims ranged in age between 20 and 65.

One of the dead was father-of-seven Eric Talley, who was the first police officer on the scene.

“Didn’t surprise me he was the first one there,” his dad, Homer Talley, said.

“He loved his family more than anything.”

Homer said his son had recently been looking into becoming a drone operator because he believed it was safer. The officer, 51, arrived on the scene just minutes after the first 911 calls came in reporting shots fired at about 2.30pm on Monday. “I have to tell you the heroic action of this officer when he responded to the scene,” Boulder Police chief Maris Herold said. She added that Talley raced to the store after “a phone call about a possible person with a patrol rifle. Officer Talley responded to the scene, was first on the scene, and he was fatally shot.” Herold said that after the shooting, Alissa was taken to hospital, where he was treated and was last night in stable condition ahead of being taken to jail.

She said: “I want to say to the community, I’m so sorry this incident happened. And we’re going to do everything in our power to make sure the suspect has a thorough trial and we do a thorough investigation.”

The store is in a shopping plaza in Boulder, a city about 30 miles away from Denver.

The killings were America’s seventh mass shooting in seven days.

The supermarket attack came less than a week after a shooting that left eight dead, including six Asian women, at three spas in Atlanta.
