Ryan in the right place to make his bit of history

-

RYAN WILSON admits he had given up on winning his 50th cap for Scotland.

But when Matt Fagerson picked up an ankle injury during the build-up to the game against France, the No.8 was in the right place at the right time to help pull off a first away win in Paris since 1999.

Wilson said: “We trained against Scotland in Edinburgh on Wednesday morning before they flew out. Matt injured his ankle right at the end and Gregor came over and said, ‘Listen, I think we might need you to go to France’.

“Luckily I had most of my training stuff with me so it was just pants and passport and I was off.”

Wilson came off the bench with 15 minutes left to play a vital role. He said: “It was the whole of the Six Nations encompassed in one game. We had red cards, yellow cards, twists and turns, and a big finish. It was crazy.”

But by yesterday morning Wilson was back to business with Glasgow as they began preparing to face Montpellier on Friday in the last 16 of the European Challenge Cup.

He said: “We’re looking at this as a chance to start the season afresh because the league campaign has been a bit of a grind.”

● Marshall Sykes believes the youngsters who got some rare game time for Edinburgh against Dragons on Sunday have made their case for regular involvement.

The 21-year-old was one of four members of the pack who made their debuts or got a first start in the narrow defeat. He said: “At the start of the season we had guys who were barely involved in training and now they’re integral parts of the team, so it’s great to get that exposure.”
