The right McCall on Scotland duo

- BY ANDY MCGILVRAY

STUART McCALL hopes Steve Clarke has cracked the problem of playing Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson in the same Scotland team.

Both started the 1-1 draw in Israel and proved key to earning a point in the World Cup qualifier.

Tierney began in a back three but then moved to centre-half as Robertson slotted into left-back, which McCall hopes is the way forward for national boss Clarke.

He reckons any criticism of Robertson is unwarranted and, speaking to Sky Sports, the former Scotland star said: “It’s totally unfair.

“Listen, Andy is one of our quality players, as is Tierney.

“And I thought Tierney showed his versatility.

“He started off in a back three, went to a left-sided centre-half and unless he’s playing against a 6ft 2ins guy as a centre-forward, then he’s comfortable there as well.

“Andy is a good captain and if he plays as left full-back, we’ll see more crosses coming in from him.”

KASPER HJULMAND has fired a warning to Scotland and the rest of Group F by claiming Denmark are revelling in a golden generation.

The Danes have got off to a sublime start in their World Cup qualifying campaign, beating Israel 2-0 and thumping sorry

Moldova 8-0. Their Under-21s have also dismissed France and Iceland in the past week in the group stage of the Euro finals.

Hjulmand, whose senior side face Steve Clarke’s Scots twice this year, reckons it is the start of something special.

The manager said: “A new era’s under way in Denmark, although it is always difficult to compare different generations.

“The standard of young players across Denmark is extremely exciting.

“I look at Danish players who are 20 or 21 and already I see a group of players among the best in the world for their age. This is because of the very talented academies in our country.

“We must continue to improve. People will say it was only Moldova but look at their results – they never get beat by this many. We made 770 passes out there.”
