Ex-footballer admits attack over work jobs being ‘stolen’

He punched colleague at removal firm

A FORMER St Johnstone footballer attacked a rival colleague outside his home after accusing him of stealing his “gig economy” jobs.

Greg Kerr, whose sister is a police officer, pounced on the fellow worker as he sat in his car.

The 24-year-old punched Stuart Gibson in the face in an Edinburgh street and tried to land more blows.

The court heard the men worked at a removal firm and Kerr believed Stuart was taking work from him.

Kerr appeared at the city’s sheriff court on Thursday and admitted a charge of assault.

A striker, he was on St Johnstone’s books between 2014 and 2016, and also played for Whitehill Welfare and Leith Athletic in the East of Scotland League. He joined Penicuik AFC last year.

Prosecutor Gavin Whyte said Stuart was waiting for his partner to arrive outside their Gilmerton home after losing his key.

Mr Whyte said Stuart was in his car when Kerr opened the driver’s door.

He grabbed Stuart through the door with his left hand and punched him on the mouth with his right before failing to make contact a few more times.

Stuart suffered a cut lip but didn’t require medical help following the attack on November 5, 2019.

Steven Donald, defending, said first offender Kerr and Stuart were employed by a removal company and it was a “gig economy-type thing” where workers were expected to “take turns” getting jobs.

The solicitor added: “This didn’t appear to suit Mr Gibson, who was effectively taking work from other members of staff. Mr Kerr took exception to this.”

Regarding the assault, Mr Donald said: “Clearly he should not have done this.”

He said Kerr, of Penicuik, Midlothian, now works as a delivery driver.
