Sammon: This whet Bairns’ appetites

- Michael Gannon

CONOR SAMMON reckons Falkirk’s promotion-chasing young guns will have got a taste for the big time after competing with Celtic.

The Bairns withstood a battering at Parkhead for long spells before eventually going down 3-0 in the Scottish Cup on Saturday.

Joint bosses David McCracken and Lee Miller made eight changes to their side as their focus is on getting out of League One.

Falkirk are top heading into the home straight and Sammon believes the battling display against the Hoops can boost their Championship hopes.

The former Hearts and Killie man said: “We knew our expectations coming into this season. We know Falkirk are a big club and everyone is gunning to be playing at a higher level.

“Games like Celtic just whet the appetite. We know what can be achieved if we do the business in the league and we are looking forward to making sure we stay top.

“We knew it would be a huge challenge against a Celtic side with a lot to play for in this competition.

“There was lots to learn and a lot of positives to take into the league and we’re going into an exciting part of the season.

“We’re delighted to be in the position we are in and back playing again. It was such a frustrating few months and you were left wondering what was going to happen.

“The games are coming thick and fast but that’s a good thing. We’re looking forward to the run in.”

Falkirk managed to hold firm until the second half on Saturday night but Celtic’s relentless pressure eventually paid off.

And Sammon added: “I thought we defended quite well.

“We maybe rode our luck in the first half as Celtic created a lot of chances they didn’t take.

“We never created much ourselves which was frustrating but we had a lot of young lads out there who will take a lot from the experience.

“Credit to Celtic, they have a lot of good players and their tails were up after they got the goal.

“They played some good stuff and we had to work hard to defend.”
