Line of Duty star’s shootout scene makes him candidate for next Bond

- BY STUART MACDONALD

MARTIN Compston has been tipped to be the next James Bond after his gun-toting performance in the latest episode of Line of Duty.

The actor was praised for his role in action sequences which saw him shoot a sniper dead.

His character Detective Inspector Steve Arnott was transporting prisoner Jimmy Lakewell when their police convoy was attacked, leading to a Hollywood-style shootout.

Compston’s former Line of Duty co-stars Craig Parkinson and Neil Morrissey said movie bosses casting the replacement for current 007 Daniel Craig should take notice.

Parkinson, who played Matthew “Dot” Cottan in the first three series of the hit BBC show, said: “This is peak Line of Duty. It is probably the greatest episode that has been written and performed.

“For my money, this is where the campaign for Martin Compston for James Bond starts. He came through that mass shootout on the streets of Belfast giving his James Bond audition.

“He got that sniper with a single shot. Daniel Craig, Martin Compston is coming for you.”

Speaking on the BBC’s Obsessed with Line of Duty podcast, Morrissey added: “That’s the thing, could he be up for the takeover? It was a brilliant sequence.” After the show aired, Greenock-born Compston, 36, gave his Twitter followers a laugh by sharing his parents’ reaction to it.

He tweeted: “The most important reviews are in from my parents. My maw ‘incredible son absolutely loved it’ my Da ‘it had an interview scene and car crash ya p***k’... keeps ye humble.”
