Top throw sets up Chris to hammer Euro rivals

-

CHRIS BENNETT wants a shot at a European hammer title next month after winning the Loughborough Invitational to keep up his unbeaten start to the season.

The Olympic hopeful, who competed in the heats at Rio 2016, threw 73.74 metres to see off British rival Taylor Campbell.

Bennett’s now in pole position for selection for the European Throws Cup and a crack at the minimum Tokyo qualifying mark of 76.29m.

The Glaswegian said: “I was more happy with back being competitive.”

Kirsty Law won the women’s discus with a best of 57.30m. BASKETBALL: Glasgow Rocks boss Gareth Murray blasted the officials last night for costing his side an upset against Newcastle Eagles.

The Rocks, led by 15 points from David Mpondo, saw a lead evaporate as decisions went against them. The BBL bottom team lost 85-83 when Eagles’ Justin Gordon sank two free throws with 1.8 seconds left.

Murray said: “We had four calls against us in the last 36 seconds. They say referees don’t influence the game but they cost us that one.” RUGBY: Academy prospect Matt Currie is determined to use the Rainbow Cup as a launchpad to his professional career with Edinburgh.

The Gunners kick off their campaign at home to Zebre on Friday night with Currie, 20, expected to be given his first start for the club at inside centre.

And Currie said: “Now that the opportunity has come to hopefully get a bit of game time, I feel I’m ready to take it.”

● Stand-in Scotland skipper Helen Nelson was fuming at their slow start in the 41-20 defeat by Italy in the women’s Six Nations. She said: “We let in a number of soft tries you just can’t get away with at this level.” MOTOGP: Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo banked his second successive victory two days before his 22nd birthday, cruising to the chequered flag almost five seconds ahead of Ducati’s Pecco Bagnaia at Portimao in Portugal to lead the championship. CYCLING: Mark Cavendish won his fourth sprint of the Tour of Turkey – after going three years without a victory on the road – after edging Jasper Philipsen on the line in the final stage.
