Oh-oh vegan Vimto no-go

-

A SCOTS mental health nurse has launched a campaign after Vimto makers altered their recipe to include vitamin D “from animal products”.

The juice-makers announced the change after Public Health England endorsed a daily supplement of Vitamin D.

But the move left fans of the drink in uproar as Vimto’s website stated the vitamin fortification would mean the drink was no longer suitable for vegans.

Ian Anderson, 30, started a petition, demanding Nichols plc, which makes Vimto, revert to its vegan-friendly recipe.

He has gained more than 400 signatures with his petition’s bid to save the drink.

Many vegans voiced their anger at the change, including some who said it “made no sense at all”, claiming there are vegan-friendly versions of the vitamin.

Ian’s petition says: “We the undersigned feel this is a regressive and unnecessary decision when an increasing amount of people are becoming vegan and eating plant-based diets to oppose the abuse, exploitation, and killing of animals.

“There is no reason why Vimto needs to contain animal products. We call on Nichols plc to either reverse this decision or to use a plant-based vitamin

D such as vitamin D2. #MakeVimtoVegan Again.”

Ian, of Lochgilphead, Argyll, said: “It’s a good thing Vimto has vitamin D in it – but Vimto are using vitamin D3, the majority of which comes from animal products. I’m not against

Vimto but why exclude some of your customers?”

On its website, Vimto said: “All Vimto squash drinks are suitable for vegetarians, due to the addition of vitamin D they are not suitable for vegans.”

Nichols plc has been approached for comment.
