A caterpillar of the community
Aldi’s rival to M&S cake returns to raise charity cash Colin and Cuthbert jokers are on a roll
THE caterpillar cake war has given internet wags the inspiration for some hilarious memes.
We’ve picked out a few below, which range from Meghan, Harry and Oprah all the way to Jeremy Kyle, but they are just the tip of the icingberg.
There have even been accusations that nude pictures of Cuthbert have been leaked… also known as pictures of an uncovered chocolate Swiss roll.
ALDI is set to defy Marks & Spencer by bringing back its copycat caterpillar cake to raise funds for charity.
Upmarket M&S has launched a High Court trademarks battle against the German giant over Cuthbert, which looks uncannily like its own iconic Colin.
Aldi’s “seasonal” doppelganger disappeared from the shelves before the case hit the headlines but is now being relaunched on May 17 in aid of cancer charities.
Its social media team yesterday asked M&S on Twitter if Cuthbert and Colin could be friends.
Aldi tweeted: “Hey Marks and Spencer, we’re taking a stand against caterpillar cruelty. Can Colin and Cuthbert be besties?
“We’re bringing back a limited edition Cuthbert next month and want to donate all profits to cancer charities including your partners Macmillan Cancer Support and ours Teenage Cancer Trust. Let’s raise money for charity, not lawyers.”
M&S replied: “Hey @AldiUK, we love a charity idea (Colin’s been a BIG fundraiser for years). We just want you to use your own character.”
Aldi dubbed M&S “Marks & Snitches” after it launched legal proceedings last week and the firms have been poking fun at each other since then.
M&S claims Cuthbert’s similarity to Colin leads shoppers to believe they are of the same standard.
Its £7 Colin the Caterpillar was launched 31 years ago and has a moulded white chocolate face and rich chocolate shell encasing a chocolate sponge body with a buttercream filling.
At £4.99, Cuthbert has a strikingly similar face and chocolate body encrusted with candy shell coated chocolate counters.
Other stores also sell copies such as Wiggles from Sainsbury’s. An M&S spokesman said: “We want to protect Colin and our reputation for freshness, quality, innovation and value.”
