SAM FIRED UP TO GET RUGBY BALL ROLLING

- BY MICHAEL GANNON

SAM WALKER admits he has been bowled over by the Kilmarnock support and he’s convinced the Rugby Park faithful can roar the side back to the Premiership.

The 6ft 6in former Colchester and Bristol Rovers shot-stopper has made an impressive start with the Ayrshire side following his summer switch from AFC Wimbledon.

Walker is making the most of his chance north of the border and he reckons the club is going places again under Tommy Wright.

The 29-year-old was gutted to go out of the Premier Sports Cup at Hibs on Sunday but he said: “That’s the biggest thing I’ve noticed – the size of the club, the fan base and how together everyone is.

“From what I’ve been told, last season was particularly disappointing but I feel a real energy around the club, the staff are together.

“If we can get the ball rolling, we can create real momentum.

“The aim for the season is to get back in the Premiership.

“I’ve really enjoyed it. Everyone was really positive about it coming up. I played most of my career in England, and I’m used to Saturday-Tuesday, the relentless nature of travelling.

“The clubs are a bit more bunched together here so there’s less travelling.

“Games are a bit more spread apart. My family have moved up and we’re enjoying living in Glasgow.

“It had been spoken about for a few months so it had always been there.

“I’d always been intrigued at the idea, I’ve always wanted to play in Scotland. I know the football is of really good quality so it was something my wife and I spoke about.

“We’ve come up fully committed and we’re really enjoying it so far.

“I came into preseason a little bit later than everyone else so it was good to get 90 minutes under my belt. It’s about getting up to speed as quickly as I can.

“We’ve had a great start in the league. I really enjoyed Sunday’s game, despite the result.

“On another day we go in a goal or two ahead and it might have been a different story.”
