Smells like team spirit as Pedro checks in

- BY ALISON McCONNELL

NEW Scotland women’s boss Pedro Martinez Losa is dreaming big after checking into Hampden.

The Spaniard has little time to organise the squad with World Cup qualifiers looming next month.

Scotland, despite being top seeds, failed to make the Euros as they finished behind both Finland and Portugal in qualifying.

Losa, who took Bordeaux Women to Champions League qualification for the first time in their history and who was also head coach at Arsenal for three years, believes there is quality within the squad.

He said: “There was success in past qualifying for the Euros and World Cup. As we saw at the Olympics not everybody can win the gold or the silver or the bronze medal.

“Sometimes it’s little details and dynamics.

“We’ll make sure we are prepared at the highest level to have chances to win every match.

“After that we will see how far we can go.

“I see a team that needs to improve in defensive principles, that needs to have a spirit to win. They were also unlucky in terms of the number of chances they created so that’s something we’ll work on.

“It’s a new start and I’m sure the players will be ready to put all their effort in to improve and give their best.”

The Spaniard will face his own country in November during the qualifiers but he believes there is much for Scotland to learn about how the game has developed in his homeland.

He said: “There has been a lot of investment from clubs; Barcelona, Levante, Atletico Madrid and they professionalised the game.

“There are three points to make as to why they have developed; the first is they have access to world class facilities, the second one is the quality of the coaching and the third is the quality of the youth academies.

“We need to dream about exciting things.”
