But while Rangers were made to sweat in their 1-0 win over Alashkert, Celtic fans were purring after Ange Postecoglo­u’s side secured a fifth straight victory with a 2-0 win over AZ Alkmaar.

Gers’ task was made even tougher when John Lundstram was red-carded two minutes before the break – and it’s left some concerned.

Gordon Hendry, Ochiltree, said: “Like most Rangers supporters I thought Lundstram would be an excellent signing. Unfortunat­ely, he’s turned out to be a liability, particular­ly in European ties.

“Let’s hope he improves over time but if new signing Juninho Bacuna hits the ground running and Ryan Jack returns to fitness his future opportunit­ies may well be few and far between.”

But Frank McFerran, Carrickfer­gus, isn’t overly enthused. He said: “I’ve never seen Bacuna play but he seems a poor man’s Joey Veerman. I hope I’m completely wrong and the boy does well. But Rangers are starting to scare me.”
