I fall asleep watching TV every night. It drives my wife mad

The comedian, 52, opens up about his most annoying telly habits and his soft spot for Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares…

- Rhod Gilbert

What’s your favourite thing on telly?

At the moment, I’m watching some Netflix stuff, real-crime stuff and a French drama, The Break. The last things I remember being amazing were I May Destroy You and Normal People. Who do you normally watch TV with? It could be me and my tour manager in a hotel room after a gig. Or it could be me, my wife Sian and our dog Rosie on the sofa.

Would you describe yourself as a binge-watcher?

Not at all – I fall asleep every single night when I’m watching TV, which drives my wife mad. I’ll get five minutes into something and then fall asleep. I’ll wake up and she has to go back and watch it all again with me. Almost every series that we watch, I either don’t finish it, or Sian has to watch each episode five or six times.

What’s your guilty TV pleasure?

Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, especially if I’m away in a hotel on my own – it’s my midnight watching. The

The Last Word

format is so rigid but I love it. I just love the way that he walks at the end of the show.

Do you enjoy the chance to do your own stuff on TV?

I’m so lucky as I get to make things like Growing Pains, where I have fun conversations with interesting people. I really enjoy the general public stuff too. The variety is great.

Who makes you laugh the most on TV?

I could come up with 10 different answers and still change my mind. Probably, though, I’d go for David Mitchell, Lee Mack and Rob Brydon in Would I Lie To You?. They have the funniest dynamic.

What would you pick as your karaoke track?

I wouldn’t do it. Do you listen to podcasts? I like a lot of newsy, current affairs podcasts and audiobooks – I’ve got David Attenborough’s latest one on the go at the moment. I also do my own podcast, The Froth, which returns in September.

What’s the greatest film ever?

It’s A Wonderful Life. I watched it when we had Christmas Day with the in-laws. We had with a full turkey dinner and watched Home Alone 2 and It’s A

Wonderful Life.

Describe your new TV series Growing Pains…

‘I get five minutes into something then fall asleep. Sian has to go back and watch it all again with me.’

The trials, tribulations and embarrassments that famous people got up to in their formative years. It’s just such great fun. Growing Pains is on Wednesdays, Comedy Central, 9pm.
