SCOTLAND’S NO.1

Still too early for John’s cap return but Craig is nailed-on starter now

- RYAN STEVENSON

I KNOW I’ve been talking him up but I wasn’t surprised to see John Souttar left out of the Scotland squad.

There’s no doubt with his ability he can be an international player and will be back involved.

But it’s about him playing regularly now for a good number of months – and playing well, which he is doing.

There are good boys in there in his position now as well, so it was always going to be difficult for him to come straight back in – especially after the international boys did so well over the summer.

When you look at the keepers, there’s no doubt who Scotland’s No.1 is now. It’s got to be Craig Gordon, hasn’t it?

Now that he’s back in the Premiership and performing how he is, it’s an easy call.

Zander Clark has been brilliant for St Johnstone in Europe but there’s no question over who’s No.1.

Craig wasn’t overly busy against Aberdeen last weekend but, in fairness, neither was Joe Lewis at the other end.

It would have been a great three points for Hearts to get but, at the same time, Aberdeen are a tried and tested top three or four team.

Having taken the lead, the

Jambos will have been disappointed to have lost the goal but Stephen Glass’ side dominated the last quarter of the match.

Tannadice on Saturday could be a sticky one. I always hated going up there.

They’re a big club with a good stadium but I always found it difficult. I don’t know why.

Maybe it was the pitch – it was on a slope. I’d get there and think, ‘I hate this place!’.

I’m sure Ben Woodburn will be involved at some stage and he looks a decent signing.

I’ve been watching his YouTube videos and he looks lively.

You never know with these types of signings but if he hits the ground running, the fans will take to him.

You can’t play for Liverpool and be a bad player. Robbie Neilson will have done his homework.

Hearts clearly like that market – young Premier League players who maybe aren’t quite at firstteam level down there.

It’s an opportunity for both parties. It’s a big chance for him and if he does well, then it’s great PR for Hearts.

It’s not as if you come up to Scotland and play Mickey Mouse football. He’ll be playing in front of 20,000 every other week.
