A YEAR ago, one of the most respected leaders in Gaelic education was honoured for her life’s work at the 2020 Gaelic Awards.
Dr Donalda McComb, who retired after 34 years as headteacher at Sgoil Ghàidhlig Ghlaschu, the Glasgow Gaelic School, was just one of several people recognised for helping to contribute to Gaelic life and language during the first year of lockdown.
In accepting her award, Dr McComb praised her team of colleagues, many of whom have benefited from being able to develop their skills at the school.
She said: “I’m so proud of the work I’ve done and I’ve said many times that you don’t do this work alone.
“But I don’t think I took in how important this all was in this city until I retired and I returned and I saw all the pupils, who I miss so much, and the staff who all work so hard.”
Now the search is on once more to find this year’s winners as the Record proudly launches the ninth annual Gaelic Awards.
There are 10 categories, including lifetime achievement and a Gaelic and the Environment award for considering the environment in their efforts to promote the Gaelic language.
A Best Gaelic Contribution to the Media will go to person or team that has contributed significantly towards the world of media through Gaelic.
Other categories include Young Gaelic ambassador, Arts & Culture, Community and Education and Best Contribution, sponsored by Bòrd na Gàidhlig.
Shona MacLennan, ceannard of Bòrd na Gàidhlig, said: “We’re delighted that this year we will be celebrating in person and we look forward to nominations from the wide range of fantastic projects and people involved in Gaelic development.
“The Gaelic Awards will help celebrate all the work put in place to support Gaelic users and learners during the challenging time we have all had.”
Nominations close on September 26, ahead of a planned live event on November 16, 2021, a t Glasgow’s Marriott Hotel.
