F1 fiasco is taking it to the Max

-

MAX VERSTAPPEN was declared the winner of a farcical Belgian Grand Prix with just two laps completed behind a safety car.

The 12th round of the Formula One campaign at a rain-soaked Spa-Francorchamps circuit finished three hours and 44 minutes after it was due to begin.

George Russell took second, with Lewis Hamilton third and halfpoints awarded.

“I hope the fans get their money back,” Hamilton said. His championship advantage over Verstappen has now been reduced to three points.

The Briton added: “You couldn’t really see five metres in front of you and you could not go flat out. It is a shame because it could have been a a good race if it didn’t rain as much.”

Verstappen admitted: “It is a win but it is not how you want to win.” CRICKET: Western Premier officials are set to investigate after the relegation clash between Greenock and Dumfries on Saturday was abandoned at the halfway stage when a home player tested positive for Covid.

The match has been declared as “no result” but Dumfries, who had posted their highest score of the season – 231-8 – believe they should be awarded the points. SPEEDWAY: Berwick Bandits were last night denied a road win on their final away trip of the season after a final corner crash.

Leon Flint clipped a fence and went down, allowing second-placed Redcar Bears a 5-1 in the final race to level at 45-45. HOCKEY: Premiership side Edinburgh University have signed up Scotland international Hamish Imrie as player/coach for the coming season.
