LORRY MANIAC IN HOME RAM ATTACK

Neighbours rescue kids as driver targets house

- BY KAITLIN EASTON

A LORRY driver repeatedly reversed his HGV into the front of a house forcing terrified children to jump from windows to safety.

The truck rammed into the property as horrified neighbours rushed to help the youngsters, who were forced to flee the end- terrace property. The incident happened in East Kilbride on Monday at 11.25pm. Neighbours raced to rescue children before the driver left the street. No one was injured. Police later found the Eddie Stobart truck near a Lidl supermarket about three miles from the scene. Demolition experts were called in yesterday to carefully pull down the building amid fears it would collapse. A man, 33, was last night arrested in connection with the incident. An eyewitness said: “I saw the full thing. I heard the noise and asked my son what it was. He looked out of the window and said it was an Eddie Stobart truck. I thought it was trying to go down the road or something.

“When I went out and saw it, he had already reversed into the house so I thought he was having parking issues or something. But he then pulled out and reversed into the house again.

“By that point, the full street was out and we were trying to get the kids out of the back window.

“It sounded like he had hit a car and when he pulled away there was glass and that all over the street.

“The house was starting to fall down. He then went flying out of the street.

“The police and fire engines were all out after that and there was loads of shouting. It was mad.”

In video footage, one neighbour can be heard shouting “he’s going again” as the truck rams into the house twice. It shows the lorry quickly reverse into the front door as a loud crashing is heard.

The driver then slams into the house for a second time before he manoeuvres out of the street and speeds off.

The man who recorded the drama said: “I was in the bedroom with my wife when I heard the first big bang.

“I thought my car had been hit – as it sounded so close, so I looked outside and saw the HGV.

“Then I figured a crime might be happening, so I took out my phone and started recording. After he left, my wife and I ran out to help the victims.”

Another neighbour said: “It sounded like crashing and I could hear loud bangs. We were worried in case the kids in the house were hurt.”

Emergency services arrived and seven homes had to be evacuated.

Most of the residents were taken to emergency accommodation.

A police spokesman said: “An investigation is under way after a lorry was deliberately driven into a house in Lancaster Crescent.”
